The Azawakh Club is honored to publish what we feel to be an important article by Dr. Gabriele Meissen, Germany, outlining the history of the Azawakh since their introduction to the west. Dr. Meissen, through documentation and observations at once convincing and startling, helps to clarify and reinforce the continuing need for and benefits of the utilization of desert-bred (Sahelian) Azawakh in western breeding programs.

Dr. Roeder’s years of work dedicated to the preservation of the aboriginal Azawakh is well known in the Azawakh community. The Azawakh Club was delighted when he accepted our first annual award as Honoree of the Year.
Recipients are selected based on a demonstrable commitment to Azawakh preservation that is above and beyond the status quo.
